The Rock Rolled On -- The History of Council Bluffs Radio
Sunday, September 18, 2011
2 p.m.
Western Historic Trails Center
3434 Richard Downing Avenue, Council Bluffs

Every generation loves its Rock and Roll.  If you're a local with graying hair, or even sufficiently old enough to be worrying about seeing a gray hair, it's quite likely you got some of your teen music fix from KOIL or Sweet 98.  The two legendary radio stations shared something in common-- they both started in Council Bluffs.  The Historical Society of Pottawattamie County takes a look back at the history of Council Bluffs radio including the disc jockey antics, outlandish promotions, and contributions these two stations made to  Metro radio.  The presentation will be hosted by original Sweet 98 Breakfast Flake and Nostalgia Rock host Dick Warner.  Now a Council Bluffs dentist, Dr. Warner spent twenty years with Sweet 98 and its predecessors in the 1970's and 1980's.
Relive some radio memories now with our two minute promo video below, and join us at the Trails Center September 18!

The program is free and the public is invited.

Paranormal Investigations at the "Squirrel Cage" Jail
Sunday, October 16, 2011
2 p.m.
Western Historic Trails Center
3434 Richard Downing Avenue, Council Bluffs

In October the Historical Society's speakers series turns to a side of one of the Society's museums few members know or probably have thought much about.  The past few years the "Squirrel Cage" jail has been of increasing interest to paranormal investigators.  At least thirty such groups have conducted daytime or overnight studies at the 126-year-old building.  Sunday, October 16, Angie Oehler of Nevermore Paranormal will talk about her group's investigations at the  jail.  The presentation will focus on the science behind such studies, equipment used, and what it is they think they are finding at our museum.   If you haven't visited already, be sure to check out the Haunted Squirrel Cage Jail page!

The program is free and the public is invited.

Historic Preservation
Sunday, November 13, 2011
2 p.m.
Western Historic Trails Center
3434 Richard Downing Avenue, Council Bluffs

More and more interest is being shown in the community for the preservation of just about everything; especially in the historic downtown districts, HayMarket Square and the 100 Block of West Broadway.  In addition, a great deal of interest is being shown in several designated residential areas as well.

In keeping with our mission statement, "To preserve the past for current and future generations," we are delighted and pleased to have organized a roundtable event with representatives of several preservation organizations in Council Bluffs:

► Rose Brown, City of Council Bluffs Planning and Development Department, representing the city's Preservation Commission
► Jim Kieffer, President, Preserve Council Bluffs
► Arlo Burke, President, Main Street Council Bluffs
► Kori Nielsen, Executive Director, Historic General Dodge House
► and Ralph Wright, highlighting some of the preservation activities of the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County.

We plan to have a time for audience participation, questions and answers in our discussion of this booming renewal of interest in the Preservation of our historic and exciting city!

The program is free and the public is invited.
